Ponce de León Is Everywhere in Tampa Bay — Do You Know Why?

Buyers, Investors, Sellers

On April 2, Florida recognizes the explorer who gave our state its name — and his legacy runs deeper in Tampa Bay than most people realize.

Highlights:

  • Juan Ponce de León arrived on Florida’s shores on April 2, 1513, naming the territory “La Florida” during the Spanish Easter season known as Pascua Florida, meaning “Feast of Flowers.”
  • Florida recognizes April 2 as Pascua Florida Day to mark this historical moment.
  • Ponce de León’s legacy is visible throughout the community — in the Ponce de León neighborhood of St. Petersburg, the historic Ponce De León Boutique Hotel on the St. Pete waterfront, the “Story of Tampa” mural at Tampa’s Municipal Office Building, and the iconic “Ponce de Leon” cigar label produced by the legendary Cuesta Rey & Co. factory in West Tampa.
  • Synergistic Real Estate, a certified woman-owned business serving the Tampa Bay area, reflects on why this history matters to those who live here — and to the buyers, sellers, and investors who continue to choose Tampa Bay as home.

If you have lived in Tampa Bay for any length of time, the name Ponce de León is quietly woven into the fabric of everyday life — and most locals have never stopped to think about why.

In St. Petersburg, there is an entire residential neighborhood named Ponce de León, tucked just northwest of downtown. The historic Ponce De León Boutique Hotel has stood on the St. Pete waterfront since 1922, its Spanish-inspired architecture a direct tribute to the explorer who first set foot on Florida soil. Walk through the lobby of Tampa’s Municipal Office Building — Old City Hall — and you will find “The Story of Tampa,” a celebrated mural by artist Lynn Ash that traces the city’s entire history beginning with Ponce de León’s arrival in the Tampa Bay area in 1513.

Even Tampa’s iconic cigar industry honored him: the legendary Cuesta Rey & Co. factory in West Tampa produced a cigar label simply called “Ponce de Leon.” His name is on our streets, in our neighborhoods, on our buildings, and in our history.

For those of us who grew up here, it blends into the background. But for anyone who has recently moved to Tampa Bay — or is considering making it home — the story behind the name is one worth knowing.

April 2 holds a special place in Florida’s history. It marks the date in 1513 when Ponce de León first sighted the Florida peninsula — the moment that gave our state its name and set the stage for centuries of growth, discovery, and community. Florida recognizes April 2 as Pascua Florida Day, a date of historical significance honoring that remarkable chapter. At Synergistic Real Estate, we think it is worth pausing to reflect on what makes this land so special — and why people keep choosing to call Tampa Bay home.

What Is Pascua Florida Day?

Pascua Florida Day is recognized on April 2 to commemorate Juan Ponce de León’s arrival on Florida’s shores in 1513. He was so moved by the land’s lush, flowering landscape that he named the territory “La Florida.” Florida recognizes this date as a moment of historical significance, honoring the origins of the state’s identity and the natural beauty that defined it from the very beginning.

What Does This Have to Do with Tampa Bay Real Estate?

More than you might think. The qualities that moved Ponce de León to name this land “La Florida” — the warmth, the natural beauty, the abundance — are the same qualities that continue to draw people to Florida today. Tampa Bay, in particular, has become one of the most sought-after real estate markets in the entire country, and it’s no accident.

Year-round sunshine, no state income tax, a thriving economy, world-class waterfront access, and a growing cultural scene have made Hillsborough County, Pinellas County, and the broader Tampa Bay area a destination for first-time homebuyers, families, retirees, and investors alike. People have been drawn to this land for over 500 years — and the draw is only getting stronger.

Why We Appreciate Days Like This at Synergistic Real Estate

At Synergistic Real Estate, we work in this market every single day — helping families find their first home in Tampa, guiding sellers through transitions in St. Petersburg, and supporting investors who recognize what Florida has to offer. Moments like Pascua Florida Day remind us why this work matters.

This is not just a real estate market. It is a place with history, character, and a sense of belonging that people feel the moment they arrive. Led by Broker and Owner Liz Welch, our team is proud to be rooted here — in the community, in the relationships, and in the land that Ponce de León once called “La Florida.”

If you are thinking about buying, selling, or simply exploring what Tampa Bay has to offer, we would be honored to be part of your story in the Land of Flowers.
