Memorial Day is set aside to honor the Americans who died in military service. Tampa Bay’s connection to that service runs deep. Long before MacDill Air Force Base became home to two unified combatant commands, the Rough Riders boarded ships at Port Tampa for Cuba.

Highlights

  • Tampa was selected as the U.S. military’s assembly and embarkation site for the Spanish-American War in 1898, with approximately 17,000 troops mobilizing at Port Tampa.
  • The Rough Riders sailed from Port Tampa for Cuba on June 14, 1898.
  • MacDill Field opened in early 1941, more than six months before the United States entered World War II.
  • Drew Field later became Tampa International Airport, and the former Hillsborough Army Air Field site is now home to Busch Gardens.
  • MacDill Air Force Base today hosts two unified combatant commands: U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) and U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM).
  • The Hillsborough County Veterans Memorial Park hosts Memorial Day ceremonies open to the public.

How did Tampa become a staging ground for the Spanish-American War?

In the spring of 1898, the U.S. Army needed a southern port close to Cuba with rail access and deep water. Tampa fit. The city was selected as the assembly and embarkation site for the U.S. military, and roughly 17,000 troops were mobilized in Port Tampa for the invasion. Among them was the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, better known as the Rough Riders, led by Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt under the command of Colonel Leonard Wood. The regiment shipped out from Port Tampa on June 14, 1898, and went on to fight at Las Guásimas and at San Juan Hill, where Roosevelt’s charge made him a household name and eventually carried him to the White House.

That history is marked today at Rough Riders Park in Ybor City, where a bronze plaque presented to the City of Tampa in 1949 by the National Auxiliary United Spanish War Veterans still stands.

What role did Tampa play in World War II?

Tampa’s military profile grew rapidly in the years leading up to Pearl Harbor. MacDill Field opened in early 1941 and was named for Colonel Leslie MacDill, a World War I pilot who was killed in 1938. Its first mission was air defense of the Gulf of America. Drew Field, a civilian airport since 1928, was leased by the Army Air Corps in 1940 and became headquarters for the Third Air Force. After the war, Drew Field returned to civilian use and eventually became Tampa International Airport.

A third installation, Hillsborough Army Air Field, opened in 1942 and supported flight operations at both MacDill and Drew. After the war, that land became the site of Busch Gardens. MacDill trained crews on the B-26 Martin Marauder and hosted a contingent of the Women’s Army Corps in 1943.

What is MacDill Air Force Base today?

MacDill Air Force Base hosts two flying wings, two joint command headquarters, and 33 mission partners, known collectively as Team MacDill. The two combatant commands headquartered there are U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM), established in 1983, and U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). CENTCOM oversees American military operations across the Middle East, Central Asia, and parts of South Asia. Under SOCOM sit the special operations forces of every service branch.

Thousands of active-duty personnel, civilians, contractors, and their families live across Hillsborough and Pinellas counties because of MacDill. It is one of the most visible reasons Tampa Bay continues to attract residents from every state and from posts around the world.

The work is current, not historical. CENTCOM’s area of responsibility covers some of the most active regions in U.S. military operations, and the decisions made at MacDill continue to shape events well beyond Tampa Bay.

Why does this matter for Tampa Bay?

Memorial Day is about the people who did not come home. Tampa has lost many of its own. Some were born in the Tampa Bay area; others adopted this region as home. Their names appear on the memorials in Hillsborough County and beyond. They are the reason this day exists.

Where can Tampa Bay residents pay their respects on Memorial Day?

The Hillsborough County Veterans Memorial Park and Rear Admiral LeRoy Collins Jr. Museum on U.S. 301 is the largest of the region’s veterans memorials. The park opened on July 4, 1991, and now holds more than 20 memorials commemorating service from the Seminole Wars through Afghanistan—the Freedom Memorial, dedicated on Memorial Day 1997, anchors the grounds. Ceremonies are open to the public.

Other Tampa Bay sites worth visiting include Fort De Soto Park in Pinellas County, where Spanish-American War batteries and cannons remain in place, and Port Tampa War Memorial Park, which marks the embarkation point of the Rough Riders.

Why should someone in the military call Synergistic Real Estate for help?

For military families relocating to Tampa Bay on PCS orders, the process moves fast. Reporting dates rarely flex. School zones, commute times to MacDill, base housing waitlists, and VA loan timelines all have to line up at once, often from another state or another country. Synergistic Real Estate handles the parts that cannot wait: previewing homes, coordinating inspections, attending the appraisal, and keeping the closing on schedule while the family is still in transit. The decision is always the family’s. Our job is to ensure nothing slips through while orders are being confirmed. Without that coordination, a family can land in Tampa with a closing date that does not align with the report date and a hotel bill that grows by the week.

Synergistic Real Estate is a certified woman-owned business based in Tampa, with deep roots across Tampa Bay and a Midwestern work ethic that shows up in every step of the relocation process. We are committed to timely and responsive communication, available by phone, text, and email. When you call, we answer.
